“They lied to us about independence. Not here. Where women still can’t safely walk the streets, and public transport is reckless endangerment. Where women drivers are treated as a running joke, and her abilities are deemed a myth. Where women in power will be fodder for nasty talk: she’s too bossy, too self-assured, too opinionated. Where the female employee is subject to requirements that have little to do with her skills, and everything to do with her looks. Where they are victimized both for being women and for being poor. where women’s bodies are being decided on by men, from schools to office spaces, the halls of congress to churches. Where despite two female presidents, little has changed for Filipino women.”
